Starter: Pictionary Game - What scares you?
Research Blog post: What are your nightmares about? Guess the theme/set piece
Photograph images and create a Popplet on your individual blog
Extension: Debate/Discussion Point:
Task 1: Go to this 13 greatest horrors of the past 13 years
In Pairs, look these films up on imdb, watch and embed the trailers to your blog (10+ = Excellent, 6+ Proficient, 3+ Basic)
Click on User Reviews Click on User Ratings
Screen-grab the User Ratings Table (Blue and Red)
Look at the breakdown of the audience by Age and Gender. Which groups is this film most popular with?
Look at the synopsis and the User Reviews, what was it that appealed to this audience (violence, choice of characters etc)
Write up your conclusions as a Szoter presentation
Here is an Example
Task 2: Build on your understanding of genre and who your audience is. Interview on your camera phones 10 people from a cross-section sample of your target audience about their expectations and preferences of the Horror.
- What scares them?
- What types of Horror do they prefer (9 sub-genres)
- What iconography do they expect (props, make-up locations, costume)
- What set pieces/scenes do they find scary or typical?
- What characters would they expect to see (type of monster/aggressor)
- Do they enjoy the use of a jump scare?
Task 3: Edit this in a 'Trailer' format by taking a montage of the most relevant statements, intercut with Title Slates of your audience sample. Add in 'Booms' and a appropriate horror soundtrack.
Task 4: Analyse your conclusions and sum up what you have learned at the end.
Skills Tip: Think about how you can practice your editing and filming skills as you do this (ie correct screen ratio, rule of 3rds, editing and adding titles, adding sounds for effect)
Review:
Who is the Target Audience?
What do audiences expect to see in an effective Horror Film?
Where should they be set?
