1.1&2 Development Session Work From Summer

Objective: To consolidate understanding of Horror Genre and Trailers

Starter: Look at student examples for remake task

Apply the mark scheme. Discuss what examiner is looking for (understanding of genre, conventional shots, mise-en-scene, sound and images - jump scares)

Consolidate and share content of your booklets

Mini Teach 1. Genre conventions
  • Sub-genres
  • Genre Cyle (Experimental – Classical – Revisionist – Parodic/Post-Modern)

Look at the Trailers for the list of films (use imdb plot synopsis to help you) in the booklet and write a commentary justifying which stage they belong to and why.

Mini Teach 2: Iconography and Semiotics (Media Language) of Horror

Yonic & Phallic Imagery

Capture images and examples of characters and props that demonstrate what you have discussed - what meaning is produced?

Mini Teach 3: Content Analysis

Examine the Trailers in the booklet for structural conventions of scenes, cinematography and edit conventions. In particular the use of 
  • Jump Scares
  • Supernatural effects 
  • Dragging off into shadows
  • Off camera stares and 'reveals'
  • Sound Booms on Title slates
  • Use of shadow or camera positioning to conceal threat

Booklet Deadline: Individual Completion of the Booklets Analysis of Trailers, Crit of 3 Films, Information on Key Films and Treatment to be completed by 11th September

Summer Assignment Deadline: 14th September for all outstanding summer tasks (mag, Poster of Trailer)
